Civil engineering is a branch of engineering that is concerned with the preservation, designing and erection of natural and man made structures. It comprises of works such as dams, bridges, houses and roads. The field of Civil engineering is split into many sub-disciplines like environmental engineering and construction engineering in addition to coastal engineering, transportation engineering and geotechnical engineering. Areas like structural engineering as well as metropolitan or urban engineering are also included in Civil Engineering.

There are many colleges in India which offer postgraduate courses in Civil Engineering. Students who wish to join these courses must have cleared their 10+2 class with at least 55% marks. They must have learned Mathematics and Physics in addition to Chemistry. The selection of the candidates is done by an entrance exam. Exams like the Jawaharlal Nehru University entrance exam (JNU), the Indian Institute of Technology – Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) and the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) are carried out by individual universities for the admission of students.

Career prospects

There are many jobs available for candidates in both the public and private sectors. Employment could be found in teaching institutions too.  The job of a civil engineer is to conserve and renovate existing structures and facilities. Besides this, they also construct new ones. After the completion of the program, candidates can also find jobs in housing societies, consultancy firm etc. as well as in quality determining laboratories. It is also possible for the candidates to join the Indian Engineering Services through the exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. The initial salary of the candidates is around Rs 8000 – Rs 12000 per month. Senior engineers will earn as much as Rs 20000 each month. Students of civil engineering working in the field of construction have an income of approximately Rs 30000 a month. Professors who are employed in Universities and colleges will get a salary that is fixed by the UGC. Professionals in the field may get up to Rs 50000 - Rs 60000 every month. The remuneration of the candidates will differ according to the category and number of the clients.
