Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law shortly called as RGNUL is located in the state of Punjab and the university was established by the state Legislature of Punjab through the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab Act 2006. The university was establishes as a national stature in the state of Punjab, thereby meeting the requirement of a centre of excellence in legal education in the modern era of liberalization and globalization.

Initially, the university began its operations from its headquarters in Mohindra Kothi and later from 26th of May 2006, it has been functioning from the mall, Patiala. The university has earned approval from the Bar Council of India in July 2006 and it got registered with the UGC under section 2 (f) of the UGC Act.
