Advertisements

Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are two conventional streams in engineering. Mechanical Engineering in layman terms can be termed as the study of automobile machines and mechanics related to that. B.Tech in Civil Engineering course primarily focuses on design, construction and maintenance of buildings and associated structures. These evergreen streams of engineering help graduates to obtain a rewarding career in either private sector companies or governmental departments/Organizations.

Scope after B.Tech in Civil Engineering

Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering offers wide scope for higher education and in building a rewarding career. M.Tech in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geo-informatics, Geo informatics, Highway Technology, Hydraulics, Offshore Structures,  etc are some of the higher study options well suited for B.Tech graduates in Civil Engineering. MBA in Operations or Systems is another popular course selected by Civil Engineers as higher education option.

Organizations like Electronics Corporation of India Ltd and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation often recruit fresh graduates in Civil Engineering in to the post of ‘Graduate Engineer Trainee’. Engineer’s India Limited, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, etc also recruits fresh Civil Engineering graduates in to the post of ‘Management Trainee’. Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd, United India Insurance Company Limited, etc are other firms recruiting Civil Engineers in to the post of Generalist Officer, Assistant Manager, and so on.

Scope after B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering

After completing B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, one can look for M.E or M.Tech courses in the related stream. Machine Design, Tool Engineering, Mechanical system design and dynamics, Engineering Analysis and Design, etc are some of the specialization areas for higher studies. MBA is also pursued by many mechanical engineers to get in to a lucrative job. Alike Civil Engineering graduates, these professionals are also recruited in to the role of ‘Graduate Engineer Trainee’, ‘Management Trainee’, etc in firms like ECIL, ONGC, and EIL. Apart from they can seek jobs in Bharat Electronics limited, Steel Authority of India Limited, Cochin Shipyard, etc.

Which course is better?

Both the courses have its own merits. B.Tech in Civil Engineering will help one to build up a rewarding career in construction sector where as mechanical engineers are recruited in automobile manufacturing and servicing firms. Even though, job opportunities are equivalent for Civil Engineers and Mechanical Engineers, Civil Engineers are highly recruited in state government departments like PWD, State Water Authority, Pollution Control Board, etc. Mechanical Engineering graduates are highly demanded by manufacturing firms. It is difficult to choose between these two.
