As the name implies, Institute of Medical Sciences is a constituent unit of Banaras Hindu University and it was established as an Ayurvedic institution in the year 1924. The college was converted as Institute of Medical Sciences in the year 1960.

Courses offered:

Banaras Hindu University’s Institute of Medical Sciences is offering the following courses under the faculties of medicine, ayurveda, nursing and dental sciences:

Faculty of Medicine:

• MBBS

• MD/MS

• DM/Mch

Faculty of Ayurveda:

• BAMS

• MD/Msay

• Ph. D in all Ayurvedic subjects

Faculty of Dental Sciences:

• BDS

• MDS in

o Operative Dentistry

o Prosthodontics

Faculty of Nursing:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing

In addition to the above-mentioned courses, the college is also offering several other short-term diploma and certificate courses.

Eligibility for admission:

For the MBBS and BAMS course, candidates must have completed their pre-medical/intermediate/10+2 or equivalent course with not less than 50% of aggregate marks (40% of marks for candidates falling under SC/ST candidates) in biology, chemistry, physics and English. For MD/MS courses, candidates who have completed their MBBS from an institution recognized by the Medical Council of India with one-year internship can apply for the entrance examination. For MDS course, candidates must have completed their BDS course from an institution approved by Dental Council of India with one-year internship to apply for the entrance examination. For the entrance examination of the MD/MS in Ayurveda, they must have completed their BAMS from a recognized institution. As far as DM/M.Ch courses are concerned, candidates with MD/MS can appear for the entrance examination.

Infrastructural Facilities:

The infrastructural facilities of the institution is augmented with the construction an auditorium located just next to the institution with the objective of meeting the demand of offering an inspiring and ambient space for international and national group discussions, public extension lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences, etc… A hospital is attached with the institution with a capacity of admitting 1200 in-patients.
