Maharshi Panini Sanskrit University was formed by the State Government of Madhya Pradesh on the 15th of August 2008 for establishing the precious language of Sanskrit among the future citizens of the country. The university was formally inaugurated by the Chief Minister of the state and the chancellor and governor of the university on the 17th of August 2008. The university was entrusted with the duty of propagating, protecting and preserving the holy language of Sanskrit and related subjects like entire body of literature, vedangas and vedic literature. The university is conducting both in-house and affiliating research and teaching activities. The university is offering under-graduation and post-graduation courses though five of its departments and the courses offered by the university is divided into four groups that include M.A, B.A, Shastri and Acharya. As mentioned earlier, the courses offered by Maharshi Panini Sanskrit University is divided into four groups and in each of these groups, the courses are offered both under non-semester and semester pattern of education. The campus of the university is located at the city of Ujjain, which is a popular historical city in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The funds for opening the university, were raised from the funds of Sanskrit Development Scheme met by the union government of Madhya Pradesh. The university is hoping to develop itself in the future by introducing more courses and by bringing more number of colleges under its jurisdiction.
