The present name of Sido Kanhu University is Sido Kanhu Murmu University and the university came into existence in the year 1992 through an Act of the state legislature of Bihar. The university is located in one of the most backward areas of the country and this area is dominated by the Pahariyas and Santhals.

The university was divided out of Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University and it is one of the member in the Association of Indian Universities. The university got its present name through an amendment passed by Government of Jharkhand through a Gazette. The university was previously in the state of Bihar and after the establishment of the state of Jharkhand, the university came under the state of Jharkhand and it is under the control of the Government of Jharkhand.

Sido Kanhu University is offering education in the faculties of commerce, science, social science and humanities and under each of these faculties different departments are functioning. Some of the departments functioning in the university are philosophy, Santali, English and Hind under the faculties of humanities, history, psychology, political science and economics under the faculty of social science, mathematics, zoology, botany, chemistry and physics under the faculty of Science.
