All India Institute of Medical Sciences was inaugurated in the year 1956 and the institute was built with grant from the Government of New Zealand. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences was established in New Delhi when the former Prime Minister of Jawaharlal Nehru’s proposal for setting up the institution in Calcutta was turned down by the then Chief Minister of the state of West Bengal Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.
