Teaching jobs can be obtained at preprimary school, primary school, middle school, high school or at higher secondary school levels. The qualifications required to obtain the job is different at various levels. Those who possess adequate educational qualifications should also clear exams such as CTET, PGT, SET, etc. Apart from these elementary requirements one must possess the flair of teaching to become successful in the profession.

Preprimary School

Preprimary classes comprises of nursery, kindergarten, and play school. To teach in any of these levels, the aspirant must be a graduate and must possess a nursery training certificate. Those who have these qualifications can also work as Anganwadi teachers and as pre-school teachers.

Primary School

Classes from 1st standard and 5th standard (both inclusive) come under primary school category. The necessary qualification to become a teacher in primary school is a pass in senior secondary education with 50% marks. Besides this qualification, one should have qualified (or appear for final exam) the two year diploma in elementary education. Those with these qualifications or other similar qualifications can attend the qualifying exam of Central Teacher Eligibility Test or CTET for primary stage. CTET qualified teachers can expect an average salary package of around Rs. 9000/- to Rs. 12,000/- per month in aided or unaided schools.

Middle School

Graduates with 2 year diploma in elementary education or B.Ed qualification are eligible to become teachers in class VI to VIII. Aspirants with these qualifications or any other similar qualifications must qualify CTET exam to become a teacher in middle school.  The duration of the test is one and a half hour and the test includes a total of 210 multiple choice questions. Qualified candidates can apply for teaching jobs in middle level classes. CTET is not however compulsory to get a teaching job in some of the private schools. The score is considered as an eligibility criterion and does not give the right to any person for employment.

High school

In order to teach students of class 9 and 10, post graduation in the concerned subject along B.Ed qualification is mandatory. Qualified candidates should clear the PGT exam to become eligible for applying to teaching jobs at this level. Teachers working in high schools can expect salary packages with in the range of Rs. 15,000/- to Rs. 20,000/- per month in governmental institutions.

Higher Secondary

Post graduates with 55% marks in the concerned subject can teach in higher secondary schools. SET qualified candidates are given priority and they are offered with basic salary packages in the range of Rs. 20,000/- to Rs. 25,000/- per month.
