Metallurgy is actually a branch of material science. It deals with the study of the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their inter-metallic compounds, and their mixtures. It is the science of metals and the ways in which technology is applied to metals.
Eligibility:
The candidate must have appeared in the higher secondary school certificate exam (10+2) of any recognized board. Physics, chemistry and mathematics are mandatory subject that the candidate should have in the higher secondary schooling. All India as well as state level entrance tests are organized to take admission in various engineering colleges of India. The admission is based on the marks or rank obtained in these entrance tests.
Course Outlook:
B.Tech course in metallurgy is a graduate level course. It is a four year full time course. The whole course is divided into eight semesters of six month duration each. The first year course is a general foundation course and is common to all the engineering disciplines. In the second year some core subjects are introduced to the student. Third year has many practical assignments to be performed by the students. Fourth year is concerned with industrial project and placement.
Job Prospects:
The student of metallurgical engineering is given a comprehensive training in core engineering principles. Therefore, the job opportunities are available in core industries. Metallurgical industries are the main employer for metallurgical engineers. The candidate can also go for research in metal extraction and properties.
