Among the few engineering subjects in the list of subjects, from which one can select the optional subject in the main exam of civil services, is Civil Engineering. There are two papers on the subject. Aspirants who have a degree in the subject usually take up this subject as their optional subject. The syllabus is graduation level, but the competition is fierce. Also this is no academic exam, so questions are of very high standard, aiming solely on elimination.

There are two stages of exam, prelims and mains. The prelims paper of Civil Engineering has 120 questions and total marks allotted are 300. The questions are all multiple option type and one third marks will be deducted for each incorrect response. In mains exam, the Civil Engineering has two papers.

The pattern of the paper II of Civil Engineering is given below.

There are two versions of the paper- Hindi and English. Students can write their answers in either of the languages, but it has to be specified before. The time duration of the exam is three hours and the maximum marks are 300. There are eight questions in the paper, but students have to answer any five. There are two sections in the paper, with four questions in each section. The first section of each section is compulsory. Students can answer any three of the remaining six, taking at least one question form each of the section. All the questions are of equal marks, each carrying 60 marks.
