It is great that you want to become Income Tax Officer and help the government collect taxes and at the same time take strong action against the tax evaders. The job of Income Tax Officer is very important in any country but especially in a country like India where very few people are paying taxes.

A lot of revenues of the government comes from taxes. To ensure infrastructure development, defence preparations and providing cheap healthcare and education for the poor, government need its citizens to pay their taxes properly.

Unfortunately in India, there are thousands of people who do not pay the taxes. It is the job of Income Tax Officers to find out about such people through any information that comes to their way and conduct raids and take strict action against the tax evaders. The action can be taken against anyone including politicians and movie stars.

To become Income Tax Officer, the candidate is required to appear in the entrance exam which is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). Once you pass the exam, you will be working for the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) which comes under the Union Finance Ministry.

Eligibility

You need at least graduation degree in any stream to appear in the Income Tax Officer exam.

Candidates who are in final year of graduation course can also appear in SSC exam.

Your age should be 18 to 27 years as on July 1 of the examination year.

The age limit is relaxed by 3 years for OBC candidates.

SC/ST candidates get 5 years relaxation in upper age limit.

There are three sections of the SSC Income Tax Exam:

1) Preliminary Exam:

There are two papers of 100 marks each in the Preliminary Exam. This exam takes place in May-June every year.

General Intellegence and General Awareness

Arithmetic

2) Main Examination

Those who will pass the Preliminary Exam would be called for the Main Examination. There are 5 papers in the written test.

General Studies

English

Arithmetic

Language

Communication Skill and Writing

3) Personality Test

Candidates who will pass the main examination would be called for the interview after which they will get the job.
