Hello Friend!
No Doubt ,in India the best colleges for pursuing engineering are the IIT,s of all across the country but for that you will have to qualify the exams conducted by the board of IIT's.

There is not any special provision for the lateral entry for the diploma holder students...You will have to face the exam .

And the for most important thing is that you you should not have a year gap of more then 2 years.the eligibility criteria for the IIT -JEE examination is :-

Eligibility Criteria :
1.The minimum academic qualification for admission through JEE is a pass grade in the final examination of 10+2 system or its equivalent,

2.Those appearing in 10+2 final or equivalent examination are also eligible for the exam.

But as you have said that the best colleges ,so my friend
i will suggest you to go for other colleges other then IIT.You can get those colleges through the AIEEE exam.The only thing you need to do is buy the application form and send it to the council.
In the application form there is special coloumn for the lateral entry .just fill it and crack the exam and get into the best colleges of india other then IIT's.

many more colleges are there to see this go for ANNAUNIV.EDU there colleges are seperated by district wise and ranking also provided.
my suggestion is that where we are studing is not a matter how we are studying is the matter. so dont give importance to the colleges. try to improve your skills.

There are many colleges for doing B.tech after dipolma.
you can apply for IIT,AIEEE and UPSEE.
in this there are many colleges which offering you to do B.tech after diploma.

There are many good colleges in India offering Engineering course and which take in diploma students through lateral entry scheme.

Its better that you go through exams like IIT/AIEEE so that you get selected in the top colleges of India.Its really difficult for the diploma students to go through AIEEE since the questions will be related to 12th standard of CBSE stream.

To get into state wide colleges you need to go through the entrance test conducted by the individual state board.Through this exam you can get selected into the top colleges of your state.

So,if you would have mentioned your State then I would have helped you better.Hope you would mention your State soon.
