For Civil service examination, you need to choose two optionals for Mains exam. Although UPSC has covered all the disciplines to choose optional subjects, but Computer Science is not being provided as optional.

So, you have to other subjects. Still there are lot of other technical subjects which can be of your interest. While selecting optional, you cannot chose two engineering optionals as it is against the rules of UPSC. So, it means you cannot chose physics & maths.

So, what could be best combination is, you can chose one engineering subject like physics, maths. Other can be geography, Public administration, Political science, and other humanities course. Geography is popular among engineers.

Also keep in mind that, UPSC is going to change the pattern for Mains in coming years, likely to be in 2014, so chose subjects such that you should not be at disadvantage, there are rumors that UPSC might remove these selection of optionals, but still nothing can be said for sure.

While preparing for optionals, also devote sufficient time for GS, as its marks are rank determining, as everyone can score good in optionals, GS, plays important role in determining your rank. Besides, there will essay exam too. So improve your writing skills.

Dear friend, UPSC has covered all the discipline to choose optional subjects, but computer Science is not being provided as optional. So, you have to choose other one. But still there are so many options available from you can select the better one for you.

hello.. i am studying bsc computer science as a graduation course ... and i wish to take ips after my graduation so can i take the subject as optional if not please tell about the subjucts...

can i select geography and indian history ?

i'm in 11th and of humanities stream (economics, history and geography ,& english )as main subjects but with optional which subject i should choose
( computer science ,imformatic practises ,psycology,or maths ) if i want to prepare for ias exams ?
