There are various courses for which you need to have mathematics in the higher secondary level but basically, it depends upon the stream you choose for your higher studies. In order to pursue bachelors degree program in Arts, Mathematics is never required. In case you would like to follow your bachelors degree program in Commerce stream as well as medical, Mathematics is optional and is not mandatory. Now, candidates willing to pursue Engineering and other technical courses needs to have Mathematics in the higher secondary level. Apart from engineering discipline, in order to pursue higher studies in Computer Application as well as Economics, Mathematics in the higher secondary level is desired by most of the recognized universities.

That entirely depends upon the course you wish to pursue after completing your boards exam. A career in the field of science or commerce demands mathematics as a subject in the +2 level. As otherwise if you go for arts stream you need not study mathematics at all

hope this helps
