There is no specific stream preference for IAS. Graduates in any subject can apply for the exam. Anyhow, selection test comprise of questions on Indian polity, geography, history of India, and general science. You need to prepare for the exam based on exam syllabus. Optional subject can be selected in accordance with the subject studied at graduation.

The minimum academic qualification that is required for the candidate in order to become IAS officer is Graduation.

One should have completed Graduation with any of the stream from a recognized university. The candidates should not require any percentage of marks in Graduation as a part of eligibility criteria.

Candidates who are pursuing final year of Graduation can also apply for the Entrance Exam to get into IAS.

As you are in 10th class, you will be having 5 more years to complete your Graduation.

The following is the complete selection procedure to get into IAS
CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test)
Civil Services Main Exam
Interview

CSAT Exam will be conducted on the following areas
General Awareness
General English
Aptitude

So, you can prepare for these at regular intervals. That is not a problem. But for civil services main exam, you have to opt for one optional subject and have to take main exam on that subject only.

The list of optional subjects will cover various areas like Computer Science field, Commerce field, Life Sciences field.

So, you don't need to worry about the streams that you have to opt for 10+2 and Graduation that best suit for to become IAS Officer.

You can opt for the stream which you are interested in 12th class and Graduation.

But one thing I can suggest you is to develop in depth subject knowledge in the course that you have opted for which will makes your preparation too easy for civil services exam.

The following is the age criteria to appear for civil services exam.
21-30 years of age for the candidates of General category
21-33 years of age for the candidates of OBC category
21-35 years of age for the candidates of SC or ST category,

Try to be in the above mentioned age as per your category by the time you appear for the entrance exam.

Wish you all the best for your great career.

Hi,

Dear, it is good that you have defined your career and you want to become an IAS officer, but you have just completed 10th and you need to be a graduate in order to apply for IAS exam.

IAS or Indian Admisnitrative Services exam is conducted by UPSC.

There are certain eligibility criteria for this exam. First of all you shoul dknow these criteria -

Educational qualification required -

You should be a graduate from a recognised university.

IT can be with any subject and any percentage.

Final year candidates can also apply.

Age required -

Your age should be between 20 years to 30 years.

There is an upper age relaxations also --

3 years for OBC category candidates
5 years for SC/ST category candidates
10 years for physically handicapped candidates.

So, now you can see, you have to do graduation for these exams.

No coming to your query about the subjects.

After 10th , you can opt for any stream in intermediate. There is no subject specifications for these exams. Similarly, after intermediate, you can opt for any subjects in graduation also.

I suggest you to take subjects, in which you think you have great interest and you like to study that subjects. Because in IAS exam the second level exam called Main exam, you will have to choose subjects where the questions will be of subjective type. And you would have to have great knowledge of those subject.

So,go ahead and complete the qualification for IAS exam and then apply.

All the best.

Let me make some points very clearly to you. No matter what subjects of course you taken in 12th/graduation, it will neither have advantage of disadvantage when you will appear for the Civil Services Examination.

As far as the Civil Services Examination is concerned, all the graduation courses are accepted as long as you complete them from recognized college.

The subjects should be selected with the idea of of backup carrer option. As you may know that there are very few seats offered through Civil Services Examination. While the number of candidates applying is easily more than 5 Lakh.

You should be prepared for the possibility of not being able to make the cut for the Indian Administrative Service. In such scenario what would you like to do. You should choose subjects that would secure you future.

One such subjects will be Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 12th standard. After which you can do Bachelor of Technology course which will secure your future. In case you fail to make cut for IAS, there would still be several good options for you to choose from.

So in my opinion you should go with the Engineering subjects in 12th and B.Tech course. But you can pick other subjects as per your choice. After that once you have completed graduation, apply for the Indian Administrative Service.

IAS Eligibility

1. Nationality: It should be Indian.

2. Qualification: Any graduation course is sufficient enough.

3. Minimum Marks: There is no criteria.

4. Age Limit: 21 years (min) and 30 years (max).

5. Relaxation: 3 years for OBC.

6. Relaxation: 5 years for SC/ST.

7. Physical Requirement: There isn't any.

Number of Attempts

1. General - 4 per candidate.

2. OBC - 7 per candidate.

3. SC/ST - There is no limit.

Dear Friend,

Any graduate can apply for UPSC Civil Services Examination which is conducted for recruitment of IAS officers every year.

So, you can choose your subjects in 12th and graduation as per your interests.

You can perform well in any particular subject if you like it.

You also need to fulfill age requirements which is 21 years to 30 years on 1st August of the year of examination. Relaxations are given to reserved categories.

It would be better if you start your preparation at an early stage of your academic career.
