IPS exam is considered to be one of the most tough and high level exam in India obviously because of the post for which it is to be written and the responsibility of that post.

It needs hard preparation for which you should follow only standard and best books. List of the books are as under:

For preliminaries:

1. Indian Polity - Constitution of India by Bakshi
2. Indian Economy - Plus One, Plus Two Books, Pratiyogita Darpan
3. General Science - Tata Mc Graw Hill Guide
4. Mental Ability - Quantitative Apitude by R.S. Aggarwal
5. Current Affairs - Magazines like pratiyogita darpan, outlook, chronicles and Newspapers like the Hindu

For mains you should choose books of following publications:

1. Arihant publication
2. RS Agarwal books
3. Pradeep Publication book

You should join a good coaching for proper guidance and study materials but regular self study with proper time management is a key to success in IPS.
