Qualification for Food Inspector

Graduates in Agriculture / Pharmacy / Food Technology / Dairy Technology are also eligible to apply for the test.Graduates in medicine who have gone through training in food inspection are qualified to attend the test. Otherwise, the aspirants should have completed the bachelors’ degree in any of the science subjects. They must have studied Chemistry as a subject in their qualifying course. Graduates in Agriculture / Pharmacy / Food Technology / Dairy Technology are also eligible to apply for the test. Only aspirants from certified Universities are qualified for the exam. Those who are having an equivalent degree can also apply for the test.

To became a Food Inspector with Govt. of India you must appear the test for the same conducted by UPSC which the notification is yet to be announced for 2012 exam.

In order to apply for Food Inspector exam the candidate must be graduate in Food Technology/Pharmacy/Agriculture/Dairy Technology. The graduate in Medicine trained in food Inspection are also eligible to apply for this exam. Ordinary science graduate with Chemistry as one of the subject are also be eligible for this test.

You must be a graduate in Medicine or, should have graduation in Science with Chemistry as one of the subject or, a graduation degree in Agriculture/Pharmacy/Veterinary Sc/Food Technology/Dairy Technology.
With 12th class pass, you are not eligible for post of Food Isspector.

Requirements for a Food Inspector

Aspiring food inspectors may qualify for state-level food inspector trainee programs through a combination of education and work experience that incorporates sanitation and scientific techniques. For example, the New York State Department of Civil Service requires trainee candidates to have completed coursework in food technology, chemistry, epidemiology, biology and environmental health, or have full-time work experience in positions such as a meat inspector, quality control technician or environmental health technician.

Food inspectors for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must have a bachelor's degree or a year of food industry experience that includes understanding and complying with food safety standards. A written test is also required for the USDA inspector positions.

Travel to inspection sites, necessitates a valid driver's license. Many states require that the applicant pass an examination and become certified. Becoming certified through a nationally recognized organization, such as the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), requires a bachelor's degree in an applied food or environmental science. Certification programs through the NEHA introduce proper food handling practices, elements of food safety management, detection and prevention of food borne disease, food sustainability and inspection processes (www.nehacert.org).


Duties for a Food Inspector

Food inspectors monitor food distributors, processors and manufacturers for safety and sanitation violations that could lead to food being contamination with adulterants or bacteria. They may inspect live animals and carcasses at a slaughterhouse or examine food imports at a port for mislabeling or other food safety issues. Inspectors report violations to the appropriate regulatory agency and are responsible for ensuring that foods are suitable for human consumption.
Outlook for a Food Inspector

A food inspector has the potential to become employed through many associations and government organizations, such as the USDA and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as well as state and county government agencies. These government positions are mostly impervious to economic upsets and offer good job security. The USDA reported that it employs over 7,500 food and consumer safety inspectors nationwide (www.fsis.usda.gov).




Minimum eligibility requirements:

Must be 21 years of age or older and have completed some college or 24 years of age or older and a high school graduate for a Bachelor's degree
Masters degree applicants must have a Bachelors degree
Doctorate degree applicants must have a Masters degree

Union Public Service Commission conducts All India Food Inspector exam for the recruitment of Food Inspectors in various offices within the country.

Structure and Pattern of the All India Food Inspector Exam

The test pattern comprises of questions on technical side, which includes science subjects.

It also consists of numerical ability and GK questions.

There will also be an English language test.

The duration of the exam will be 150 minutes.
