SYLLABUS OF IAS:
Exam Pattern: All India Combined Competitive Examination for the Civil Services conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) comprises of two successive stages:
The prelims are held around May-June.It has objective ie multiple choice questions. There are two papers (duration of each being 2 hrs). a)General studies b) Optional subject ( 2. Main examination The main written examination usually takes place in Oct-Nov, it comprises of 9 papers in all . Duration of each paper is 3 hrs. Language: one of the Indian languages, English, Essay GK and Current Affairs: 2 papers on general studies Optionals: papers from two subjects that fall in optional-1 and two papers from optional-2 (a choice of subjects is listed by the UPSC in the prospectus) Candidates who are successful in the main examinations are eligible for an interview which plays a crucial part in the selection. From Civil Service Examination 2011, Preliminary Examination would consist of two papers- Paper I and Paper II. The syllabus and pattern of the Preliminary Examination would be as under : (Paper 1) (200 marks) - Duration : Two hrs. Current events of national and international importance History of India and Indian national movement Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc. Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc. General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change-that donot require subject specialization General science. (Paper II) (200 marks) – Duration : Two hrs Comprehension Interpersonal skills including communication skills Logical reasoning and analytical ability Decision making and problem solving General mental ability Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. –Class X level) English language comprehension skills (Class X level) Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper-II) will be tested through passages from English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper. IAS exam is conducted by the UPSC every year. To apply for
the IAS examination a candidate should be graduate in any discipline from a recognized university. The IAS exam is based on the following pattern. A candidate has to give 9 papers for the IAS exam. Paper I 300 marks Paper II 300 marks Paper III 200 marks Paper IV & V 600 marks Paper VI, VII, VIII & IX 1200 marks I have attached the syllabus for the IAS examination. This time UPSC pattern is changed and it is called as CSAT which is coming into effect from Civil Services Examination, 2011.and so there is no option subjects...
It consits of two paper and each paper of Two hrs.. (Paper 1) (200 marks) consists of
It is of purely objective type and qualifying exam... (Paper II) (200 marks)
It is of purely subjective type and followed by interview.... In comprehension subjective paper following are the optional subject you can choose any one of it

The IAS comes under the Civil Service exam that is conducted by the UPSC every year.
The basic educational qualification for appearing in the civil service exam is that a candidate must be graduate in any field from a recognized university. Also, final year students can apply. From 2011 onwards, there is a change in syllabus, and the preliminary exam will now consist of 2 papers each of 2 hours duration and both will carry 200 marks each. IAS exam is conducted by the UPSC every year. To apply for the IAS examination a candidate should be graduate in any discipline from a recognized university. The IAS exam is based on the following pattern. A candidate has to give 9 papers for the IAS exam. Paper I 300 marks Paper II 300 marks Paper III 200 marks Paper IV & V 600 marks Paper VI, VII, VIII & IX 1200 marks I have attached the syllabus for the IAS examination.
