The Master of Engineering (M.E.) is a course based master’s degree. It is a purely academic qualification and is definitely more respected and recognised degree. For M.E. degree, a candidate should have B.E. / B.tech degree. Candidates who wish to pursue higher studies in engineering can opt for M.E. courses. M.E.is predominantly a lecture based programme which is accredited by one of the professional engineering bodies like IMechE, IEE, etc. M.E. Degree holder is able to get chartered status with master’s degree.

However, M.E. is usually designed for students who plan for employment upon graduation and who are already in the engineering workforce. It aims to develop business awareness and it normally focuses on engineering ground. A degree in M.E. not only helps in getting a lucrative job in the field of interest but also help in continuing research work in respective fields. It includes a lot of practical work.

On the other hand, the Master of Technology (M.tech) is two years postgraduate program. The program is basically designed to equip students with the basic practical skills with sufficient theory to develop in them the power of systematic thinking and reasoning, practical approach and exposition and also to understand the principles involved in the application. The broad aim of this program is to develop the skills and knowledge required to access the power of innovation, research, technology, product development and to understand, integrate and promote the management of technology in industry, thereby improving business productivity and global competitiveness. The major objective of this programme is to produce Research Engineers who can get the position of “Technologist” in the industries and research institutes.

The importance of this course is at height now. As the craze and popularity of B.tech is increasing, students are applying for M.tech after the completion of bachelor’s degree to get more knowledge and specialisations on their respective trade so that they can get high payable jobs. Candidates have to get through the GATE exam in order to get admitted in to this course.
