Nagaland University was established in the year 1994 on the 6th of September by the Nagaland University Act 1989. The university has three campuses one at Medziphema, one at Kohima and the headquarters at Lumami. To manage the everyday educational affairs of the university, each of its campus has its own academic and administrative units. The university is situated in the tribal dominated state of Nagaland with border at Myanmar, Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The university was established with the objective of disseminating and developing knowledge by offering research and educational facilities in almost all branches of education in which the university may deem to be fit. It also aims at making provisions for integrated courses in social, physical sciences, natural sciences and humanities disciplines. The list of colleges affiliated to the university is given below:

Nagaland University is offering education in faculties like commerce, science, humanities, etc… through the 26 departments functioning in its main campus. The university got the status of affiliating university and central university from the University Grants Commission. Out of the 26 departments functioning under the university, some departments are conducting research activities as well in addition to offering education. The central library of the university is located in the Kohima Campus and this was established in the year 1994 with a collection of 19475 books. But now, the collection of books has crossed the 30,000 mark apart from journals and back volumes. The library was automated in the year 1999 with financial assistance from the UGC’s INFLIBNET.
