Cardiac Surgeon – How to become Cardiac Surgeon?
Cardiac Surgeons are basically doctors who detect defects in heart and perform operative procedures on the heart and the blood vessels linked to it. They give treatment for different heart disorders like artery diseases, heart failure and valvular heart disease.
Qualifying Exam
The basic qualification needed to become a Cardiac Surgeon is an MBBS degree from any Institute approved by Medical Council of India. Then they should do three year MS in General Surgery. They should complete three year MCh in Cardiology after that. They can do fellowship in various topics after that. Some of these topics are given below
- Pediatric cardiac surgery
- Cardiac transplantation
- Adult acquired heart disease
Who are eligible to apply?
For obtaining MBBS degree, candidates should pass plus two with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Such candidates should also qualify the entrance test conducted by the Institute offering the MBBS degree. For doing MS in General Surgery, candidates should complete their one year internship after MBBS. They should also need to qualify in the entrance test conducted by the Institute offering the MS degree. After completing the MS in General Surgery from any Institute approved by Medical Council of India, they can apply for MCh in Cardiology. They need to qualify the corresponding entrance test to get admission in MCh Cardiology course at any Institute. While doing MCh in cardiology, candidates can specialize in either cardiovascular surgery or cardiothoracic surgery. Several Institutes in India are offering both MS and MCh courses.

Skills required for a Cardiac Surgeon
A cardiac surgeon should be well experienced and highly skilled person. They should be able to use the medical instruments correctly. They should have the skill of sewing neatly without causing many scars after operation. They should need good maths skills as they have to determine the rate at which the heart pumps while doing the operation. They should have good interpersonal skills to interact with patients and their family. They need to have deep knowledge in anatomy to treat the patients efficiently.
