‘Assistant Labour Officer’ is one of the designated job profiles well suited for graduates as well as PG diploma holders in HR, Personnel Management, Industrial Relations or Labour Welfare. Eligibility requirements for the job profile vary slightly with the policies of the recruiting body.


Eligibility Criteria for Assistant Labour Officer

The eligibility requirements specified for the job profile of Labour Officer differs slightly with the changes in the norms and policies of Public Service Commission/ Staff Selection Commission of the concerned state. Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC) has recently invited applications for the position of Assistant Labour Officer. Candidates having any of the following qualifications can apply:

  • Diploma in Industrial relations and Personnel Management
  • Diploma in Labour Laws
  • Diploma in Labour Welfare
  • Bachelor’s degree in either Arts, Commerce, Science
  • MBA in Human Resource Management/ Human Resource Development

All these qualifications must be obtained from any of the recognized University with Odia as one of the subjects in HSC. Also the age of the candidate must fall within the limits of 21 and 32.

But the eligibility specifications mentioned by Tamil Nadu PSC varies slightly with OSSC. The educational requirements mentioned by TNPSC can be any of the following.

  • Master of Labour Management (MLM) degree from Tamil Nadu Institute of Labour Studies

Or
Bachelor Degree in any stream +

  • Bachelor degree in Law
  • Degree/Diploma in Labour Relations
  • Degree/Diploma in Social Science
  • Degree/Diploma in Social Welfare
  • Degree/Diploma in Social Work
  • Diploma in Labour Laws and Administrative Laws
  • Diploma in Labour Laws from the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi
  • Masters degree in Work Education from University of Madras
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Labour Administration from Tamil Nadu Institute of Labour Studies
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from Madurai Institute of Social Work
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management, Industrial Relations and Labour Welfare from Madras Productivity Council

So from this information, it is obvious that graduates/post graduates in HR/ Personnel Management, Industrial Relations/Labour Welfare are mostly preferred for the job position of Labour Officer. In this case the lower age specified is 18 years. Candidates below 30 years of age are only eligible to apply.
Candidates with required eligibility should attend and pass the selection process as specified by the concerned authority. In most cases there will be written exam and interview. Written test of OSSC is conducted as a single paper test covering questions on labor law and social science. But for TNPSC, there will be two papers for the written exam. First paper comprises questions on general science and language where as second paper covers questions related to labour law and industrial relations.
