Biotechnology is the field of biology that deals with live organisms and its bio processes. It can be used in many areas like Medicine, Engineering and even Technology and other related field which necessitate the use of bio products. Those individuals who practice this are called as Biotechnologists. Candidates who have completed their course in biotechnology can find jobs as research scientists, bio informists or as Lecturers. They can also be employed as science writers, or as quality control officers in food or chemical manufacturing companies. There are many colleges in India that offer graduate and postgraduate courses in Biotechnology.

Qualifying Exam

Candidates who are interested to join this course have to write an entrance test that is held by the various universities and autonomous institutions like the IIT’s. The admission to the IIT is by the Joint Entrance Exam. The admittance to the other institutions is done by their own separate exams in addition to other national and state level exams.

The selection of the students into different universities for the postgraduate courses is done through an All India Combined entrance Exam that is carried out by the Jawaharlal Nehru University. The entrance to the Indian Institute of Technology for the 2 year Masters course in biotechnology is done by the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. The JEE is held for the admission of students into the 5 year M.Tech course.

The admission of the aspirant’s is strictly based on their marks scored in the entrance exams.

Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates who are applying for this course must be Indian residents. They should be no less than 17 years when they apply. Candidates must have finished their 12th standard with Biology and Physics in addition to Chemistry. Graduates in all sciences are qualified to join the Masters course in the subject.

How to prepare for exam and interview?

Candidates who are appearing for the written exam must have studied all the topics on the subject.  They can also get ready for the exam by reading magazines or other books related to the biotechnology. It is also possible for them to download more information about the exam and its pattern from the internet. When they are appearing for the interview, the candidates must make sure that they answer straightforwardly.
