CBSE Class X English – Language and Literature papers

The Central Board of Secondary Education conducts the exam of Class X English – Language and Literature every year along with the exam of other subjects. It is a scoring subject. The duration of the exam is 3 hours and the maximum marks carried by the exam are 100. All the questions are compulsory but there are internal choices in the paper. There are four sections in the paper. The details of the sections are given below.

SECTION A: READING

This section carries 20 marks. Two unseen passages will be given of which Passage one carries 8 marks and Passage two carries 12 marks. There will be 2 questions on vocabulary apart from the general comprehension questions.

SECTION B: WRITING

This section also carries 20 marks. There are questions on letter writing (the letter can be formal or informal), paragraph writing and a short question on writing task on the basis of verbal or visual stimulus.

SECTION C: GRAMMAR

This section is of 15 marks. The questions are based on English Grammar prescribed by the syllabus.

SECTION D: TEXT BOOKS

This section carries 45 marks. The prose portion is of 20 marks and poetry is of 10 marks. 15 marks are there for the supplementary reader.
