IIT-JEE entrance exam is one of the most difficult exam for the students. Out of 5 lakh studends who participate in the exam only 2 per cent makes the cut. This makes IIT exam mentally very demanding and often students starts taking coaching from 10th class onwards who specifically wants to crack the IIT-JEE exam.

Yes, your 12th class marks do decide your fate in appearing for the IIT exam. Firstly, you must pass the exam from a recognised board.

Secondly, you should secure at least 60 per cent marks in 12th board if you belong to General, OBC and DS categories.

Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Physically Disabled (PD) categories students should score at least 55 per cent marks to appear in the exam.

In case you have not scored 60 per cent marks in 12th, please don't be disappointed. You can sit in the CBSE 12th Class Improvement Exam that gives you a golden opportunity to improve your overall percentage.

CBSE Improvement Exam basically allows you to sit in one or all five 12th board exams and improve your overall percentage. It is same as regular CBSE board exam and studends who improve their percentage from CBSE Improvement Exam are entitled to sit in IIT-JEE exam, only if they manage to secure 60 per cent marks.

It is advised that you take part in the all 5 exams since you will get a separate marks sheet after taking the exam. You probably do not want to have 2 seperate marks sheets for 12th board.

There is another option of completing the 12th class all over again if your sole intention is to crack the IIT-JEE exam.

In case you fail to achieve 60 per cent marks again through CBSE Improvement Exam, I would recommend not to waste any more time and consider appearing in exams for AIEEE and KCET. Entrance exam for AIEEE and KCET requires candidate to obtain 50 per cent marks in 12th board.

Remember, not being able to crack the IIT-JEE is not the end of life. There are plenty of other options.

Dear IIT-JEE aspirant,

Earlier there was no effect of 12th marks on IIT-JEE exam.
Selection in IIT-JEE exam was purely based on IIT-JEE exam.

But from now "Getting admission in IITs have become Qualifying a Tournament". You each and every performance will be counted and on the basis of that final marks will be counted and rank will be made.

Firstly, 10+2 marks should be above cutoff (given by the board) to appear in IIT-Advanced exam.
Secondly, for IIT-Mains exam your 10+2 marks must be above 60% so that you will be eligible to appear in IIT-Mains exam.
Lastly, IIT-Advanced exam. In this exam only 1.5 lakh students will appear. Successful candidates will get IIT and below them will get NIT, IIIT, and other deemed universities.

Good Luck!!

Hi friend
Yes, next years onwards the board exam marks will have more importance than before. It has been decided that the top 20 percentile students only will be eligible to appear for the IIT mains exam through which a student gets admission into IIT.
It is thus important for you to do well relative to other students. Top 20 percentile means to be in the top 20% of all the students who take the board exam. For Example: if 20 lakh students give the board exam, you must get a rank of atleast 4 lakh to be eligible for admissions in IIT. So be focused on board studies as well in addition to the advanced jee preparation.
good luck
