i am a student of 12th in commerce. i want to build up a career in merchant navy. can i join this in commerce streme.

No after pursuing commerce stream it is not possible to make a career in merchant navy. You would be eligible only if you had studied Physics, Chemistry along with Maths and English in 12th standard. Even candidates with marine engineering or mechanical engineering background can also apply for this stream. It is also a must to have 60% marks in these subjects. Since you have completed 12th you should complete graduation next for better prospects.

Unfortunately it is not possible for commerce student to join merchant navy. Only science stream students are eligible to join merchant navy therefore you will have to consider other career option.


Candidates can join Merchant Navy either after completing 12th or after completing graduation in nautical science or engineering. In all these scenarios you must be science stream candidates with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as the subjects to be eligible for job in merchant navy.


As you can see it is not possible for you to pursue merchant navy. You should consider relevant courses to commerce stream like B.Com, Chartered Accountancy etc.



Merchant Navy Eligibility

1. Must have completed 12th with PCM subjects from a recognized board.

2. After 12th you need to pursue either B.Sc in nautical science or marine engineering.

3. Only unmarried candidates are selected for merchant navy.

4. You will have to pass medical test. Other requirements will include 6/6 vision and no color blindness or sea sickness.



Direct Entry

1. Candidates can apply for deck cadet job in merchant navy after completing 12th.

2. Those who have completed B.Tech in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Technology can also apply for the job in merchant navy.

3. However such engineering graduates will have to go through 9 months long pre-sea course in Marine Engineering.
