There are two kinds of officers in merchant navy

Deck / Navigation Officer:

Engineering Officers:

To become a merchant navy officer, one needs to be atleast 10+2 or a diploma holder, after which he/she needs to undergo pre-sea training.

For 10+2 students there are the following courses available.

3 year degree course in Nautical Science (Institutions : TS Chanakya (Through IIT-JEE, Southern Academy of Maritime Studies (Chennai), Vels Academy of Maritime Education & Training (Chennai), Vels Academy of Maritime Education & Training (Chennai))

4 year degree course in Marine Engineering (Institutions : MERI (Through IIT-JEE), Tolani Maritime Institute (Mumbai), Southern Academy of Maritime Studies (Chennai), Vels Academy of Maritime Education & Training (Chennai))

3 month course for Deck Cadets

For diploma students, there are the following courses available.

2 year course for Diploma Holders (Institutions : Southern Academy of Maritime Studies (Chennai), Vels Academy of Maritime Education & Training (Chennai))

For Mechanical Engineering & Naval Architecture students, there are the following courses available.

1 year course for Graduate Mechanical Engineers & Naval Architecture graduates. : (Institutions : Southern Academy of Maritime Studies (Chennai), Samudra Institute of Maritime Studies (Lonavala), Vels Academy of Maritime Education & Training (Chennai))

Yes you can join Merchant Navy after joining 12th. For that you will need PCM subject in you 12th standard.

After 12th you will also need to appear for few entrance exams like IGNOU or IIT JEE. After you clear the exams you will be called for pre sea training?

You will be able to join Deck Cadet after you completing the pre sea training.

An alternative way is that you can join Maarine Engineering for which there are admission available every year through merit or through entranc etest.

You can apply for merchant navy after 12th exam with mathematics.
The main subject is required for this is PCM.

You can join indian navy after 12thclass if you have physics, maths and chemistry combination.so as do join merchant navy..

but you must have scored more than 60% in PCM in 12th board...............

There will be 2 year course for Diploma Holders and successful completion you will be join merchant in either of departments

You can join Merchant Navy in the following ways.

1. By pursuing bachelor's degree program in nautical science or marine engineering. You should pursue B.Sc in nautical science if interested in the navigation department and to get into the engineering department, you will need to pursue course in marine engineering.

The minimum qualification to pursue these courses are +2 with PCM from a recognized institute.

2. Through direct entry as a deck cadet or Engine Cadet/ Fifth Engineer/ Junior Engineer.

An undergraduate with PCM in +2 can join merchant navy as Deck Cadet.

A graduate in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Technology Engineering can join as Engine cadet/Junior Engineer after going through a pre-sea course conducted by the MERI

Hello.....you can join merchant navy either as a deck cadet or engineering cadet after 10+2.
It is better to join as a deck cadet as you have a chance to become the captain of a ship.
You have to apply for IMUCET and then for sponsorship.you can fill the form for IMU on www.imu.tn.nic.in.for sponsorship companies you keep visiting www.jobships.com.

To join in Merchant Navy you have to do the following courses after +2:

• B.E Marine Engineering
• B.Sc Nautical Science
• M.E Marine Engineering

The eligibility that you would need to do these courses are:

B.E Marine Engineering:

Duration: 4 years

Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English

B.S.C Nautical Science:

Duration: 3 years

Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English

M.E Marine Engineering:

Duration: 2 years
