As a beginner, you can start your exam preparations using NCERT text books (for general science). After gaining basic knowledge, you can refer books having more information. For preparing mental ability session, you can go with text books of R.S Agarwal. Reading leading news dailies are useful for improving general awareness and vocabulary. Syllabus for IAS is very vast and suggesting some books will not help you. After collecting detailed syllabus, you have to find out reference books or study material for each subject.
