To become deputy commissioner of direct tax, you need to appear for the CSE (civil services exam) conducted by UPSC every year and choose IRS (Indian Revenue Service) as the first service of your choice,
depending on your merit/rank, u'll get the one.

To become a Deputy Commissioner of Direct Taxes, one has to apply, appear and crack Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC every year.

To become Deputy Comm. of Direct Taxes one has to apply for IRS(Indian Revenue Service) of Civil Service Exam.

The eligible candidate aspiring for IRS, Civil service Exam, must be an Indian National having either appear for the final Graduation Degree exam or pass in any stream from a recognised University within the age of 21 to 30 years with upper age relaxation for reserved candidate with good Physical Fitness.

The selection is through two stages of written exam followed by Personal Interview.

The eligible candidate applying for Civil Service exam is called for a Preliminary exam also called as CSAT(Civil Service Aptitude Test) and the candidate selected from CSAT is called for a written Main Exam and the final selection is conducted through personal interview out of candidate selected from Main Exam.
