To be sure to secure a seat you must be in the top 100. Those within the top 500 will get calls. It will then depend on how you fare in the interview round. So you must well prepared for the same. Also you must have good academic record too. They do look for consistency.

Dear friend,
There are 7 old iit's and 7 new iit's opened recently.To get addmission in old IIT's your rank must be under 3500 for lower branch too. But due to new iit's opened their is increased in seats so you can get addmission to new iit's under 7500 rank too.But their are total 8956 seats in iit's.S0,to get addmission in iit your rank under above ranks.
