Carbon dioxide (chemical formula CO2) is a naturally occurring chemical compound composed of 2 oxygen atoms each covalently double bonded to a single carbon atom. It is a gas at standard temperature and pressure and exists in Earth's atmosphere in this state, as a trace gas at a concentration of 0.039 per cent by volume.
Sulfur dioxide (also sulphur dioxide) is the chemical compound with the formula SO
2. At standard atmosphere it is a toxic gas with a pungent, irritating and rotten smell. The triple point is 197.69 K and 1.67Kpa. It is released naturally by volcanic activity and is a potent global warming gas.

Some of the major differences between Carbon dioxide and Sulphur dioxide based on molecular structure and other properties are given as below:

1.Carbon dioxide has a linear shape due to its molecular structure O=C=O and Sulphur dioxide is bent molecule because of the fact that it has lone pair of electrons on the atom sulphur.

2. Due to the molecular structure carbon dioxide has no charge and dipole moment but in sulphur dioxide charge and dipole moment exists.

3. About pollution issues, carbon dioxide is the major pollutant in atmosphere and is released due to burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, vehicles smoke etc.Carbon dioxide is the main source of Green house Effect.

Sulphur dioxide is produced due to fuel combustion.

The difference between the carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide is mainly due to their different shape and structure .

The shape and structure of carbon dioxide is linear ( O=C=O ) as the carbon is sp hybridized in this molecule and it has no lone pair of electrons.

Where as the structure of sulphur dioxide molecule is trigonal planar in nature as sulphur is sp2 hybridized but its shape is bent -T due to availability of one lone pair of electrons on sulphur .

The major source of carbon dioxide are animals , human beings , burning of fossil fuels ( like wood , coal ,gobar gas ) etc. .

Also the major source of sulphur dioxide in nature is combustion of fuels used in vehicles , different engines ,etc.

Both the gases are harmful to human environment leading to Green house Effect , Global Warming etc. .

Carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide has many differences.

Both have different molecular formula.

Both have differences in there hybridisation, lone pair electrons and even in their dipole moment .

Carbon dioxide is emitted by burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and smoke. It plays a major role in global warming.

Sulphur dioxide is emitted by fuel combustion.

Please note that

# Chemical formula of Carbon Dioxide is CO2 while chemical formula of Sulphur Dioxide is SO2.

# Both are gasesous state of matter.

# Carbon dioxide mainly released when human being exhaled. Plants& tree convert this CO2 into oxygen gas.

# While Sulphur Dioxide is associated with Acid Rain due to which our historical monuments are getting harmed. Best example is Taj Mahal which is getting harmed due to Acid Rain.

# Actually, both the gases are mainly responsible for global warming and pollution to the environment.

# The main contributor of CO2 in environment is human respiration, combustion of fossil fuels, deforestation etc. While Sulphur Dioxide is accumulated in the environment due to smoke released from internal combustion engines of vehices etc.
