The role of Marine Engineers involves performance of tasks pertaining to the maintenance and operation of different machineries in a modern ship. Some of these machineries include air-conditioning plant, refrigerators, compressors, winches, crosses, pumps, etc…
Since marine engineering industry has a wide scope of employment opportunities, many students are moving towards the B. E/B. Tech Marine Engineering course and the list of government institutions offering this course in India is given below:

In addition to the aforesaid government colleges, a number of universities and private colleges are offering Bachelor of Technology in Marine Engineering Course.
Eligibility criteria for seeking admission to the B. Tech in Marine Engineering:
For seeking admission to the Bachelor of Technology in Marine Engineering course, candidates must have completed their 10+2 with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry subjects with not less than 60% of aggregate marks from a recognized board of education. The other requirement is that candidates must have secured a minimum of 50% of marks in English.
Entrance Examination:
Like other B.E/B. Tech engineering courses, admission to the Marine Engineering course is also done based on the performance of the students in the state level or All India level entrance examination. Colleges run by state government takes both All India level and state level engineering entrance score, while the institutions run by Central Government takes All India level course for admission of students to the B.E/B. Tech Marine Engineering course.
Higher studies after B.E/B. Tech Marine Engineering:
Candidates, who have completed their B.E/B. Tech course in marine engineering, can take up Master of technology course in Marine Engineering or they can also take up their M. Tech course in any other branches of engineering of their interest.
Career prospects for B.E/B. Tech Marine Engineering degree holders:
Some of the previously mentioned institutions like International Maritime Academy themselves appoint candidates who have completed their B. Tech Marine Engineering as junior engineering on merchant ships. Once a candidate successfully completes the required period as junior engineer, he is permitted to take up competency examination for getting posting to the post of Chief Engineer. This clearly indicated that within five or six years of the completion of their B. Tech Marine Engineering course, candidates can get posting as Chief Engineers and they can also get an attractive pay scale.
