Nagaland University came into existence in the year 1994 on the 6th of September and the university holds the pride of being the only central university in the state. The university offers education through three of its campuses located at Kohima, Lumami, and Medziphma. The campus of the university at Lumami is acting its headquarters and campus at Kohima is acting as Interim headquarters. The university is offering education from the tribal dominated state of Nagaland and each of the three campuses of the university has its own academic and administrative unit for managing the everyday academic affairs of the university.

The Lumani campus of Nagaland University has seven departments and they are zoology, sociology, political science, geography, economics, chemistry and botany, while the Kohima campus has six departments namely archaeology, history, geology, English, education and commerce. On the other hand, the Medziphema campus has 12 departments under its control namely rural development & planning, plant pathology, horticulture, genetics & plant breeding, entomology, animal production & management, agronomy, soil conservation, agricultural extension, agricultural engineering, agricultural economics & statistics and agricultural chemistry & soil sciences. Nagaland University is not only acting as teaching university, but it is also acting as an affiliating university with nearly 48 colleges under its jurisdiction and these colleges are located in the different parts of the state of Nagaland. The university has been successfully monitoring and coordinating the progress of the colleges working under its jurisdiction and makes sure that the colleges offer the best quality education with high-quality curriculum design for each course offered. Apart from affiliated colleges and departments functioning under the Nagaland University, there are also four centres each for Gandhian Peace Studies, Mass Communication, Bio-diversity and Tribal studies.
