MBA: Some perceptions and some realities
What after this??? The question seems to be common in the minds of every college pass-outs. For the higher studies aspirants there are lots of options available and this put them in a deep dilemma. All students are aiming for the sky and each want to be successful in every thing they do. Most people are thinking of the short-cuts and some are ready to work hard. But everybody complaints that they really didn’t get any chance to prove themselves.
After seeking lots of advices and a series of counseling we select a course and in the course of doing that we understand the reality, it is not our platform. But thanks to the advisors and counselor, we really find someone to blame and point fingers at for the wrong decisions. People always show a reluctance to learn from others mistakes. They follow the same path even after so many years. This is the case related to the Master of Business Administration.
There is a deep misunderstanding about the course among the aspirants and among the common man. Here we discuss some beliefs and some reality about the course that will help all the college pass-out to think before selecting the course.
What it takes for an MBA?
Most of the students think that MBA/PGDM or other Post Graduate Program in the business field is a key to success, a short-cut to win the competition. After the completion of the course one will be placed into an MNC and the companies are going to pay lakhs and crores on them. Thereby they can own a luxury Villa and at least one BMW and will have lots of bank balance and savings. With these expectations students put some effort in cracking the CAT or MAT and hit everybody who comes in front in the group discussion. Anyhow they manage to get a seat in a B-School. Then the students are normally having a feeling that they are safe and have achieve the goal.
But don’t you think the expectations are not less than a colorful daydream? It is not based on any ground reality. If you are an MBA aspirant with these dreams, just believe that it is not your course. You can be an exception, unless until you don’t have a silver spoon to feed. Business administration is not cracking the competitive exam and performing well in the Group discussion. It has to play more than all these.
The students need to understand the requirements of being in the competitive field. They must realize the changing behavior of the business world. So students should be more sensible and be a keen observer. But most of the MBA/PGDM holder understands the reality after some years of experience in the industry only. In the initial stage they feel stress and frustration and this makes to go with lots of complaints about life. It gradually influences their personal as well as the social life. On a positive note, this mismatch is helping a lot of business like Stress free and Yoga centers etc.
Crisis starts…
The base of the problem starts from the daydream itself. Nobody is going to restrict you from dreaming, but needs some reality based on them. Understanding the fact that it will take some years of experience and patience is very important.
Most of the MBA/PGDM graduate does not have any idea of what business is. So ultimately how they can manage something for which they don’t have any idea. There is a common belief that going to a B-School is to gain expertise in communication and human management skills. Is that only needed to become a business professional? Then why can’t a language expert or a psychologist go in to business and succeed!
If you ask, what is business? to a B-school student, only a few of them be able to give you a proper definition. But in reality they don’t know what exactly it is. They dreamt to be in MNCs but don’t even have any idea what is going on in a small Kirana shop. How business is done there? It is completely not their fault.
Our academic curriculum is only focused on teaching the students with a lot of technical as well as the theoretical terms. The text book contains plenty of success and failure stories and that become some theories. It discusses Harvard and Oxford cases along with famous scams. It is a colorful world of luxury bikes, cares and branded apparels. The students talk jargons and gets confused among Myopia, Gain traction, Face time, POS, OOO etc. Most of the B-Schools in our country compete with each other and offer a world class ambience and facilities to the students.
So at the end what students are going to gain? They feel it is a fantasy world and the life is going to be like this. The system makes an illusion and forces the students to believe that they are matching the global arena and the international business standards. In India, the B-Schools require a harmony between international and national business. The examples should highlight at the ground level itself and the reality of the world they are going to face. The B-Schools should offer the hardship of business to the students and this will minimize the dissatisfaction they are going to feel after placements.
What Employers Looking For?
We discuss about the present situation and some beliefs about the business administration program. Now look at what is the expectation of the job providers from the business graduates and what are the qualities they needed to attract the prospective employers. Most of the employers across the country identify employees depending up on the qualities.
Corporal and Emotional Traits
A business executive should possess the physical as well as the emotional attributes. One should be able to withstand the pressure and stay calm in the crisis situations. One should be able to handle the stress and possess a superior personal hygiene and should be energetic and passionate. The employer expects the business graduate to have emotional maturity and empathy. They should able to take the important decision and have a better balance between personal and professional life.
Intellectual and Analytical ability
Today’s executives are expected to be more rational and quick in decision making with high intelligent quotient. They should be innovative, creative and have technical competency. They must possess the nature of risk taking and good concentration. They should be in rapport with the changes happening all over the world and have better skill in problem solving.
Spiritual and Ethical Standards
Every employer looks for people who are ready to give and take respect. The executives are expected to have good moral and ethical standards. People should be transparent, sincere and having values in social responsibilities. People having good spiritual proclivity are encouraged in the modern corporate.
These are some expectations of the employers from the MBA/PGDM graduates. Expectations always seem to be so high but the graduates should have a fair approach towards theses outlooks. Understand that MBA is not a passive course, it need a lot of efforts. If students are ready to work hard and can shows a little patience then one can over achieve their dream. Remember one thing ‘Rome was not built in a day’, but surely a day is needed.
