Masters degree is a professional level academic degree which takes two years after the bachelor’s degree. This degree helps in achieving in-depth knowledge and skills in a specialised subject. Masters degree is of great advantage when competing for jobs. Most of the higher-level jobs like business management, public administration, medical research, public policies, etc requires candidate to possess a master degree as the minimum qualification. This degree provides better prospects in job search as well as helps to achieve higher scales of pay.

Students pursue master’s degree in order to boost their educational knowledge on a specialized subject, advance their careers and increase their salaries.

PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy. It is an advanced academic degree which takes three to eight years of study beyond the bachelor’s degree. This is a very specialised and highest degree possible to attain. Most students seek PhD with a goal of becoming university professors or researcher in most fields. The main aim of this degree is to equip students with proper credentials that are basically required to be competitive in a professional life as well as it allow students to excel in a variety of academic fields for e.g. health care, psychology, business and management, etc.

The main differences between PhD and master’s degree are as follows-

PhD normally takes 3-8 years to complete depending on the program whereas masters degree require less time to complete i.e. approximately 2 years.

PhD degree aims at preparing students for research-oriented careers whereas master’s degree is more career-oriented.

PhD program is more competitive compared to master’s degree program.

PhD is basically a program of advanced research whereas master’s degree is a program of advanced coursework.

The standard of PhD degree is comparatively very high as compared to master’s degree.

For admission, some PhD programs require master’s degree.
