INTRODUCTION

The development of sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic equipments has given tremendous assistance to the medical practitioner in his work with patients. With the development of a variety of equipments the need for skilled technicians and other trained Para-medical personnel has increase. Medical technologists are behind the scene workers in the medical profession and form a very important link in the profession.

NATURE OF WORK

Medical Technologists

Laboratory investigators have become critical to the medical practitioner. Laboratory technologists are involved in performing laboratory tests essential for detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. They are trained to perform a range of pathological investigations from simple blood count smear to blood grouping, preparing vaccines, examining tissue samples, body fluids and preparing samples. The job of medical technologists can be in many areas such as cytology, hematology, serology or histology or urinanalysis, blood banking and microbiology.
Radiography, Radiotherapy and Radiation medicine technicians

Radiological technicians specialize in radiography, radiation therapy, sonography and nuclear medicine. Radiographers work with radiologists and ultrasonologist carrying out the routine work taking X rays, CT scans, MR scans of the patients. These are then seen by radiologists for diagnostic purposes.

Optometrists and Opticians

Visual defects, conditions of the eye and visual system correctible by glasses, contact lenses, vision therapy, and vision aids fall within the prevue of optometrists. Opticians make lenses as per the prescriptions using the grinding technique, adjusting eyeglasses and ensuring a proper fit. Optometrists use special type of machines for testing the eyes of the patients and can prescribe the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Medical technologists are employed in medical laboratories or hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, private laboratories and in research centers. Radiographers work in Xray department and spend a lot of time on low lighted environment. They are exposed to radiations and must wear protective gear.

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Medical technologists need to have a scientific bent of mind. Diagnosis required the use of diagnostic equipment for radiological, pathological, biochemical or microbial and ophthalmological environments. Precision accuracy and meticulous handling is essential for carrying on the job.
Optometrists and opticians need to have a mechanical aptitude and good vision and well developed hand eye coordination. Interest in mathematics and science is important.
