Geology is one of the many subjects which the students can choose from as an optional subject for the prelims of Civil Services Examination. Aspirants have to clear the prelims to be eligible to sit for the mains. Students who have studied Geology in their graduation or those who have an interest in the subject and think that they are at ease with the subject can take up Geology as an optional subject. The pattern of Geology is given below.

The examination is of two hours duration with maximum marks of 300. The number of questions in the paper is 120. All the questions carry equal marks. The questions are all objective types i.e. they are given four alternative answers with a single of them correct. Students should mark the appropriate answer on the separate answer sheet provided. Multiple answers should not be marked as they will be treated as wrong answers, and for each wrong answer 33% of the marks allotted for that question will be deducted. Same is applicable for multiple answers. However there is no penalty for questions left unanswered. To score good marks one must solve as many papers as possible. Practice is a key element to succeed in the examination.
