Civil Services are the most coveted services in our country. The posts of IAS, IPS, and IFS etc are the most prestigious ones in the country. Every year the exam for these services is held as the civil services examination by the Union Public Service Commission. The exam is taken by millions of students but only a few make it through. The exam is held in two stages. The first stage is preliminary exam followed by the mains. Philosophy is one of the subjects which you can choose from as an optional subject for the prelims. The pattern of the exam is given below.

The exam is of two hours duration with a total of 300 marks. There are 120 questions in the paper. All the questions are of equal marks. The questions are all multiple choice types. They have four options out of which only one is the correct answer. Students have to mark the answer which is most appropriate to them on a separate answer sheet provided. Marks will be deducted for wrong answer. The penalty for wrong answer is 1/3rd of the marks allotted to that question. Multiple answers will also attract the same penalty. No marks will be deducted for unanswered questions.
