Architect - How to become an Architect?
Architecture is the area of study about buildings, its design, structure and proper allocation of space. This profession is a multi-disciplinary profession which has huge competition. The field of Architecture covers spatial design, visualization, security and raw material management. An architect has the license to construct building and has full involvement in all stages of the construction process.
An Architect takes care of matters like safety, practical function, and cost-effectiveness as to satisfy the customers’ needs. They design and supervise construction work of houses, offices, hospitals, skyscrapers, landscapes, and even cities. A good Architect should bring together the qualities of an artist, professional and businessman. Other than construction and designing, an Architect is trained in a wide range of activities which involves conceptual problem solving to project management.
Qualifying Exam
As to join an Architecture course, a student must go through a 5 year UG course in Architecture. B.Arch is offered in many colleges in India. The candidates are taken in after clearing National or State level Entrance Examinations.
The CBSE carries out a national level entrance examination which is called the AIEEE for the admission to UG programs in B. Architecture and B. Planning. There are many government and private institutes offering this course.
The examination consists of Basic Math’s, a Drawing test and an Aptitude Test. In India there are other entrance exams also, like the National Aptitude test in Architecture, the Joint Entrance Examination etc. Most of the private institutes carry out their own entrance exams. Some of the UG and PG courses which students can join to become an architect are:-
- B. Arch. (Architecture)
- B.Tech. Architectural Engineering
- Diploma in Architectural Assistantship
- Diploma in Architecture (Dip. Arch)
- M. Arch (Architecture)
Who is eligible to apply?
Aspirants need to have a bachelor’s degree in architecture or a Diploma in architecture as to become a qualified architect.
The basic eligibility requirement for joining a course in B.Arch is 12th standard with a minimum of 50% marks in Science subjects. In addition to this, the applicant has to qualify the required entrance examination.
How to prepare for exam and interview?
An Architect requires special qualification other than B.Arch. This includes designing skills, aptitude for business, social and legal awareness, responsiveness about the new trends. An Architect also needs to have exceptional computer literacy for dimensional drawings, financial management. A certification in CAD is very vital now a day’s.
It is advisable for a student to practice as an apprentice in a good architectural firm during the final year of the course. Even after graduation, work as an apprentice to learn the practical aspect and gain technical knowhow under a senior Architect. This training will help to build up the aptitude to work independently.
