Laryngology and Otology are the specialized fields in medicine. Both the sections deal in the same field ENT. Even though they both are in same field, they differ in many aspects. Laryngology is that medical field which involves larynx and its concerned diseases. Otology is the medical field that is concerned with ear and its diseases.

Laryngology Course and Opportunities

Laryngology is the specialized branch in medicine that is concerned with the study of larynx and its related disorders. The field mainly deals with the infections, disorders and damages of the vocal cord. It also includes the study of various methods of treatment of diseases affecting larynx or the voice box. The various problems or disorders related with larynx include laryngeal cancer, laryngopharyngeal reflux, vocal fold nodules and cysts, spasmodic dysphonia and voice misuse/abuse/overuse syndromes. The physicians who practice laryngology are usually called as laryngologist. They are also called phonosurgeon. The candidates who have finished their pre-medicine graduation can join for the doctor medicine course in the related specialization. After this four year graduation, they have to undergo a residency programme in ENT or otorhinolaryngology to become a licensed laryngologist. On completion of this residency training, they can practice on their own or can find employment in various hospitals.

Otology Course and Opportunities

Otology is also the medicine field which is concerned with ear and its related problems. The course in otology includes the study of diverse diseases or disorders related to the ear. It also includes the learning of methods of treatment to cure the problems in ear. Otology can be considered as the specialization in biomedicine which studies the normal and pathological structure and functioning of the ear. The physicians practicing in this branch is called otologist. They provide their services to cure the patients who suffer with problems in ear and related body parts. They also treat the various types of head and neck related problems. They may also work with neurosurgeons in many situations. The otologist must have in-depth knowledge in biology, anatomy, physics, chemistry and neurology.

Key differentiators between Laryngology and Otology

Laryngology is the medicine field which involves the study of larynx and the related diseases and various treatment methods whereas Otology involves the study of ear, nose, throat and its related problems.

Laryngologist only treats the diverse disorders related with larynx like larynx cancer, etc. whereas an Otologist treats patients with problems in ear, nose and throat and in addition they also treat the diseases related with cranial nerves.

Although laryngology and otology deals in the ENT field, they differ in many ways especially in the specialization and the work nature experienced by the professionals in each field.
