The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak came into existence through an Act of Parliament and it is a central university functioning in India. The university began its operations in the year 2008 and its jurisdiction is spread over the whole nation. The university is wholly funded by the Central Government of India through the University Grants Commission. The university was established with the main objective of meeting the need for higher education of the tribal people. Presently, the university is offering education through the 21 departments functioning under its control and fourteen more departments are likely to be introduced by the forth coming session.

Some of the departments presently functioning under Indira Gandhi National Tribal University are Department of Tribal Art, Folk Literature and Culture, Folk History, Museology and Traditional Medicine, Psychology, Zoology, Tourism, Hospitality and Hotel Management, Sociology & Social Anthropology, Political Science and Human Rights, Philosophy, History, Hindi, Geography and Regional Development, Environmental Science, English & Foreingn languages, economics, commerce, computer science, chemistry, businss management, botany, bioetechnology and Ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology.
