The post globalized and liberalized Indian economy is experiencing a shrinking role of the state and growing role of business and corporate in overall growth of the nation. Corporates with their wealth, innovation, professionalism and wider reach are able to bring about an impact on the pace of development and growth of the economy.

According a survey recently conducted by the TERI, it was found that the public expectations from businesses and corporates are growing and people of India feels that business sector should play a more expansive and wider role in the society. Apart from offering good quality products at affordable cost, companies should strive to make their functions environmentally sound, to mitigate poverty, to reduce human rights abuses and to adhere to high labor standards.

Corporate Social responsibility of public sector undertakings in India:

Public Sector Units serve for the interest of the society by taking responsibility for the effects of their operations on communities, shareholders, employees, customers and the environment in all forms of their operations. The Government of India has issued guidelines on Corporate Social Responsibility of Central Public Sector Undertakings through its report on ‘social responsibilities and public accountability of public undertakings. Even though, the government believes in making Public Sector Enterprises technically dynamic and growth oriented, the policy of the government is to offer greater powers to the boards in such a way the PSEs can function professionally. When the focus is on generation of surpluses for self-sustaining growth, the public sector undertakings normally undertake some amount of commercial responsibilities for furtherance of their commercial objectives. All government organizations cannot be treated on equal scale for undertaking different types of social activities, it is for the individual organizations to discover and implement social responsibilities keeping in view their financial ability to sustain those activities.

Jobs in CSR:

Most of the multinational companies have a separate wing of CSR and department dedicated exclusively for doing community development activities directly or indirectly in their vicinity. In some companies, CSR is running under environment or HR department. These companies recruit professionals from rural development, social work and other developmental fields for managing and undertaking the CSR activities of their organization.

Government jobs in Corporate Social Responsibility:

When it comes to government jobs in CSR, companies whose operations directly affect the nature like power generations, manufacturing, mining, etc… have their own CSR wing. In addition, CSR professionals are in great demand in Resettlement and Rehabilitation and these professionals can find job placements in public sector undertakings and government agencies.
