How to join Ph.D in Mathematics?

Those who have a master’s degree (in mathematics/ Statistics) can apply for Ph.D in mathematics. Eligible candidates can pursue the course with Indian Institute of Science, Lingaya University, Delhi University or CMI. Admission in most cases is done through written exam and interview. Delhi University considers academic score along with entrance test score for selection.
Eligibility Criterion for Ph.D in Mathematics

Master degree holders in Mathematics or Statistics are usually considered for admission to Ph.D in Mathematics course. Apart from this, institutes like the Institute of Mathematical Sciences considers bachelor degree holders in engineering or science also.

Indian Institute of Science offers a different course named Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences at doctorate level. Other than the qualification mentioned above, candidates with M.Sc in Physics, Chemistry and Biology can also apply. B.Tech/M.Tech holders are also preferred.

For admission in Delhi University candidate must have an M.Phil or M.Sc degree in Mathematics/Statistics (or equivalent). M.Phil holders must have a minimum academic score of 50% marks where as for M.Sc graduates need to have at least 55% marks.

Admission Procedure for Ph.D in Mathematics

Admission in Institute of Mathematical Sciences is done on the basis of National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Ph.D scholarships Screening Test. The exam is usually conducted in the month of January. There will be 40 questions for the test from topics like Algebra, Analysis, Topology, and applied mathematics. Total time allotted for answering a combination of objective as well as descriptive model questions are 150 minutes.

Chennai Mathematical Institute also conducts an entrance exam for selecting eligible candidates. The exam is usually conducted in the month of May, at major examination centers across India. This entrance test is meant to evaluate candidate’s aptitude in mathematics and covers questions from areas like complex analysis, calculus, algebra and real analysis. There will be two parts for the entrance exam. Each part carries 50 marks. Candidates who qualify the entrance exam will be called for interview, before confirming their selection.

Delhi University carries out admission on the basis of candidate’s score in under graduate degree, post graduate degree and University conducted entrance test. 50% weightage is given for candidate’s score in University conducted written test. Among the remaining 50% marks, 25% (weightage) is distributed equally for UG and PG level marks.

Applications for admission process/entrance test can be submitted through online or offline method. Online applications can be forwarded through the web portal of the concerned University. Offline application can be submitted either in person or through post. On receiving the application, candidate will be acknowledged via email or post. Important dates for admission or entrance test are also intimated via mail.
