If you are planning to join the Indian Navy you have to clear the SSB (Service Selection Board) interviews, followed by a medical and an all India merit list.

If your plan is to join the merchant navy things are quite simple. To join as an engineer on board you need to do your B.Tech with either mechanical engineering or naval architecture. After that you need to appear for the tests conducted by various institutes for GME, a 1yr pre sea training.

After completing the training you can join the ship as trainee engineer.

Its not possible for you to take your family along with until you obtain the rank of a chief engineer.

If your plan is to join the deck side, you can take your family once when you become the captain.

After being a marine engineer.....how long exactly will it take to be a captain???
And after being a captain....what kind of ships will one take control of???

What is d minimum & maximum duration of work in merchant navy as an engineer and after that what is d minimum & maximum rest time given (for spending time with family)??

suggest good colleges for marine engineering.....and does vision matter in it

better don't join merchant navy you will spoil ur career. boz from last 8yr wages have not increased where as on shore wages have become almost 3 times. now wages are going down due to over supply of officer. salary of 4th engineer come down to 2500 from 3500 dollar. and even after wasting time in passing exam and doing lot hell of courses u will not achieve anything. the situation of shipping is not going to change in near future where as going to be worse than it. and remember u r working for only 6 month in a yr. rest of time u r not getting any thing means u r unemployed. better dont' see the what colleges are showing u will earn this much and that much. believe me or do ur research. there are many company who don't even pay you and u can't do anything as there is no low to catch there culprits. i have never seen so much fraud in any industry than shipping. plz think 10times before taking any step. thanks

Is merchant navy better or software engineering ?

Its very difficult to stay in merchant nave. But you get decent salary so you will stay and earn millions and become rich and buy BMW:
here is per month salaries:---

Junior Engineer=Rs. 10,000/-
Fourth Engineer=Rs. 25,000/-
Third Engineer=Rs. 50,000/-
Second Engineer=Rs. 75,000/-
Chief Engineer=Rs. 25,00,000/-

Along with salary you also get food i.e. two chapattis and gobi manchoorian in the morning, 1 plate rice and beef curry in afternoon and Biriyani and dahi vada in night. And accommodation is also free. So can save all money and buy BMW.
