To become an income tax officer you will have to answer an exam called Staff selection commission also known as S.S.C. The entrance exam is generally held in April month. For updated news about this exam subscribe to employment news and check it daily during peak months.

The exam basically consists of a written exam and if you qualify you will be called for an interview

The subjects are General English,General Intelligence,General Awareness,Arithmetical Ability

There are three stages of examination
1. Preliminary exam
2. Main exam
3. Interview

You need to clear the preliminary exam to appear for the Main exam which is followed by an interview.

You need to have a bachelor's degree to be eligible for the examination.

Physical Standards:Height 157.5 cms,Chest 81 cms
Physical Test:
Walking 1600 metres in 15 minutes
Cycling 8 Km in 30 minutes
Syllabus:General Intelligence,General English,Arithmetical Ability,General Awareness

To become income tax officer, there are two options -

Firstly, Apply for Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC, after clear this exams you will be selected as Income Tax Officer in government department.

And secondly, Appear in the Combined Graduate level examination conducted by Staff Selection Commission SSC, to get selected in ITO.

So, S.S.C. conducts examination every year for recruitment to Income Tax Department. The examination is held once a year, generally in the month of April. So please always check the employement papers for more detail and if you have clear the written test and interview then you have selected as a Income Tax Officer.

The examination consists of -

Written examination

Interview for Personality Test for such candidates as may qualify in the written test.


The subjects of the examination are as follows-

Arithmetical Ability

You will have to write the Staff Selection Commission exam to become a income tax officer. A graduation is required to appear for SSC, so if you are pursuing ICWAI with a graduation then it is o.k.

If you want to become an Income Tax Officer, you have to first of all pass the Graduation Degree. There after, you have to appear for the Indian Civil Services Examination, Preliminary and Main Exam, to qualify for Interview.
The civil services exam is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi, for IAS, IPS etc. and Income Tax Officer also. Best of luck.

dear friend,
first let me tell u dt an there is no exam to recruit ppl directly for the post of income tax officer (ITO). some ppl confuse an IT Inspector for an IT officer. ITO is a separate post and is one designatin higher than an IT inspector. to become an IT inspector, one hz to appear in the 'combined graduate level exam' conducted by Staff Selection Commission almost every year bt sometimes once in two year.

it consists of a TIER I exam (objective). on clearing this one shall appear in the TIER II exam which too shall be of objective nature. [mind u, tier I is jst not a qualifying exam because d marks obtained in this shall be taken into calculation for preparation of final merit list]. on clearing the TIER II, one shall face an interview (which is pretty easy n comfortable. dont panic at the name of interview).

on the basis of the combined marks obtained in TIER I, TIER II and interview, the final merit list is prepared.

The Income-Tax/Excise Inspectors Exam is conducted by the SSc every year generally in the month of april.
The eligibility criteria for this exams are:-
candidate must hold degree of a recognized University.
Age limit-Minimum 18 years and maximum 25 years on the first July of the year of examination.Relaxble for SC/ST.

The written examinations consists of-:

Today math plays a great role for getting success in any examination. one can know the basics and fundamental of math only after have it as ones favourite subject in his study and also pratise it briefly. All the examination of of staff selection comission, upsc, banks, railway etc. mostly asks 50% mathematics questions.
if you want to become income tax or excise inspector then the simplest way for you to complete your degree and apply for combined graduate level examination conducted by SSC every year and remember math plays a key role in it.

Qualifying Exam

The Staff Service Commission (SSC) conducts an entrance exam annually for the recruitment of candidates in the income tax department. A series of written, oral and physical tests will be carried out for the selection of the candidates. Those candidates who clear these tests will be called for an interview later.

Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates who are applying for the post of Income tax officer must appear for the SSC exam. The basic qualification required to apply for the SSC is a degree from a recognized University or its equal. The candidates must be atleast 18 years and not more than 27 years at the time of applying ( age relaxation is available for the candidates belonging to the backward classes).

An income tax officer is someone who deals with income tax matters concerning the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The CBDT is a department of the Central Government of India.


As tax is one of the main incomes of the Indian government, the duty of an income tax officer or ITO is to collect tax from the citizens of India. The notification about the exam and the details regarding the rules and syllabus will be available in newspapers like the Employment News, Rozgar samachar etc.

Qualifying Exam
