Common Admission Test is for the MBA admission. The exam is conducted under the rotation policy by the Indian Institutes of Management and the CAT score is accepted for admission by various colleges in the country including IIMs, IITs, IISc, NITs etc.

You should not appear for the Common Admission Test during the third year but only when you have completed the degree and awaiting the results. The Common Admission Test is conducted in a 21 days period between October and November.

You should appear for the exam only if you will be able to submit degree before June 30 of next year. If you can't then there is no point of appearing for CAT, since the score is valid for only one year.

You will have to complete the Common Admission Test again next year. Therefore since you are in the third year, I will recommend that you appear for the CAT exam after finishing the Bachelor of Technology course.

CAT Eligibility

1. The candidate must hold a Bachelor's degree.

2. Minimum of 50 percent marks in it.

3. SC/ST need 45 percent to apply.

Exam Pattern

Quantitative Ability

Data Interpretation

Verbal Ability

Logical Reasoning

How to Prepare

First you need to decide whether you will prepare for the Common Admission Test on your own or if you want to take coaching. Institutes like T.I.M.E., PT Education and IMS Learning are considered the best.

If you want to prepare on your own then first thing to know is what the test consists of. For example Quantitative Ability includes what you studied in Maths during 10th standard. Things like Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry etc.

Verbal Ability is to test your English skills therefore reading, grammar, vocabulary is part of the exam. While the Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning includes Graphs, Charts etc.

You can start the preparation by studying the Class 10th books from CBSE/ICSE for Mathematics and English grammar. One should also read newspapers to improve your English.

The Editorial pieces of newspapers like The Hindu should be read. Underline all the words that you could not understand and then look for their meaning. This is great way to start the preparation.
