IPS i.e. INDIAN POLICE SERVICE

IPS is one of the civil service of government of India. To become an IPS officer, you have to appear in Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC{Union Public Service Commission} every year generally in the month of May.


No. of permissible attempt for Civil Service Exam:- 4 for General , 7 for OBC and Unlimited for SC/ST.

the minimum qualification required to appear in IAS or IPS examination conducted by UPSC is graduation in any discipline from a recognized institution.


the student who studied three years after 12th they are eligible for IAS or IPS examination.

PUC is the course which is for two years duration after 12th. so i think this is not equivalent to graduation. this is an intermediate course before university. so after PUC you will not be eligible for IAS or IPS.

the other eligibility criterion for IAS and IPS is your age should be in between 21 to 30 if you belongs to general category. for reserved candidate there are relaxation in age as per government rules. you must be Indian resident.

21 years must be completed on 1st August of the year, which a candidate is appearing. Maximum 30 for general category, 33 for OBCs and 35 for SCs/STs . The physical standards are important for the job profile and the rigorous training at the NPA, which includes weekly run for 10 k.m. in 60 minutes, route march for 25 k.m. UAC, Horse riding, rock climbing, assault course, PT obstacles, rope climbing etc. I shall give a detailed a/c of this sometime.

Services are divided into technical and non-technical. Technical services are IRTS, IPS, DANI PS, CISF, RPF & other Police organization. The Medical standards for Technical Services are stringent.

For IPS-

Height – Male 165 cm Pahari Male (general also) & ST (not the SC/ OBC) – 160 cm

Female 150 cm Pahari Female (general also) & ST (not SC/ OBC)- 145 cm

Chest – Male Minimum 84 cm. Expansion 5 cm.

Female Min 79 cm expansion 5 cm.

Many people fail in this test of chest expansion.


Eye sight – 6/6 or 6/9 distant vision for good eye. 6/12 or 6/9 for worst eye. Near vision J 1 for good eye. J2 for worst eye. The correction is by lenses
only. High standard for the Colour-blind test. No inherent night blindness. Vision should stereoscopic.

Blood pressure (High) – Age 23 – 123, age 24 – 124, age 25 –122, age 28 – 124, age 30 –125, age 32 – 126, age 34 – 127.

Ear- good listening & normal ear cavity. 1000 to 4000 frequency hearing impairment shd not be more than 30 decibels.

Nasal- candidate should not stammer while speaking.

For becoming IAS officer you have to crack Civil Services examination which is conducted by UPSC every year.

For Civil Services examination you must have following qualification if you want to apply for it:

-Graduation in Any discipline from a reocgnized university.

-Age should be between 21 to 30 years if you are General Category candidate.

-There is age relaxation available based on the category to which the candidate belong i.e SC/ST have 5 years age relaxation and OBC have 3 years age relaxation .

There is no separate exam for IPS post. To get eligible you must have passed your graduation degree in any discipline from any university which should be recognized.

So B.Tech is a graduation field and after completing or while pursuing Final year you can apply for Civil services exam, But this is not the eligibility criteria.

FOR THE REQUIRED QUALIFICATION OF I.P.S OFFICER IS GIVEN BELOW :-

I. PERSON IS MUST INDIAN.

II. MINIMUM GRADUATION IN ANY RECOGNGRED UNIVERSITY.

III.AGE OF GENERAL PERSON IS 21 YEAR TO 30 YEAR

IV. AGE OF O.B.C PERSON 21 YEAR TO 33 YEAR.

V. AGE LIMIT OF SC/ST PERSON 21 YEAR TO 35 YEAR.

IPS exams are conducted by UPSC every year.
Minimum qualification required to appear for IPS exams is Graduation from a recognized university.

Age limit: 21 years must be completed on 1st August of the year, which a candidate is appearing. Maximum 30 for general category, 33 for OBCs and 35 for SCs/STs.

Number of Attempts:
Four attempts for open, seven for OBCs and no limit for SCs/STs. If a person appears in the Preliminary Examination or even one paper is counted as an attempt.

i have qualified 2 examination.after that i was doing btech in computer science branch but only completing the 4th sem i was to get married n after marriage i was not able to complete my btech. i want to b an ips officer.please suggest me what shall i do???
