To apply for lecturer job you have to appear in the University Grant Commission National Eligibility Test UGC NET. There are basic requirements to appear in the NET exam which is for lecturer job, JRF and even for students who wish to pursue PhD. Once you have passed the NET exam, you would be eligible for lecturer job but only in a central government colleges.

You can not get admission in state government colleges through NET. For job in state government colleges you will have to appear in the State Eligiblity Test (SET) which is different for each state. However in case, the state government decides against conducting SET exam you may get admission on the basis of NET performance.

Now lets talk about the eligiblity criteria to appear in NET exam. Below are the details:

You should have a post graduate aka Masters degree in any field to appear in NET. Under graduate candidates are not eligible for NET.

You are allowed to appear in NET exam for same subject in which you have completed masters course. For example if you have a M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering then you can only apply for Mechanical subject.

The minimum percentage requirement is 55 percent without roundoff for the General category candidates.

For reserve categories like SC/ST/OBC etc 50 percent without roundoff is the minimum requirement.

Age Criteria:

Only candidates up to 28 years are allowed for the Junior Research Fellowship.

As per UGC NET rules there is no age limit for the candidates appearing for lecturer job.



In the case of SET exam, the requirements are almost the case as NET. It is possible that some state may have some different criteria for the SET exam.

There is no age limit to become a lecturer. There are many instances where after gaining some years of industry experience candidates switch over to the teaching profession. They will need to clear the NET exam for which there is not age limit to apply. The only requirement is that they should be post graduates and they should have secured 55% in the same. So if you are interested in becoming a lecturer you should start preparing for the exam based on your specialisation in post graduation.

You can give the UGC NET exam to become a lecturer.

To apply for this exam you must secure 55% of marks at master's level from a recognized university.

Even final year master's students are eligible to apply for this exam.

The PhD holders will get a percentage relaxation of upto 5%.

Age limit:

For lectureship: There is no age limit for lectureship post.

For junior research fellowship: Your age should not be more than 28 years.
There is age relaxation for the SC/ST and physically handicapped students.
Age relaxation will also be provided to students with research experience.

If you successfully qualify the exam , then you can become a lecturer.
