You can take up any degree in any stream so as to apply for IPS post. There is no specification on subjects to be taken for graduation for this post. The only criterion remains that the degree should be taken from a recognized institute. Lower age limit for this post is 21 years. Higher age limit is specified as 30 years. UPSC Civil services need to be attended for this post. On clearing this, physical test and personal interview need to be also attended.

IPS - Indian Police Service and to become an IPS officer, one has to apply, appear and crack Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC once every year and for which you should have Graduation Degree.
The eligible candidate must be an Indian National having either appear for the final Graduation Degree exam or pass in any stream from a recognised University within the age of 21 to 30 years with upper age relaxation for reserved candidate with good Physical Fitness. Any degree is good enough for Indian Police Service. As long as the course and the university is recognized by the government, there is no issue in applying for the Indian Police Service.
When I say any degree it includes the following: Bachelor of Arts MBBS Bachelor of Commerce Bachelor of Science Bachelor of Computer Applications Bachelor of Technology Bachelor of Business Administration All of the above any many others are accepted for the Indian Police Service. You will have to appear for the Civil Services Examination by the Union Public Service Commission. Only upon clearing this exam you will become IPS officer. Eligibility Criteria 1. You should have Indian citizenship. 2. There is a need of bachelor degree. 3. No minimum percentage criteria. 4. If younger than 21 years, then you are not eligible. 5. Anyone older than 30 is also not eligible. 6. OBC can apply till 33 years. 7. SC/ST are allowed by UPSC to appear till 35 years. Selection Process The Civil Services Examination has 3 critical stages. Preliminary Exam The first stage is preliminary exam. It is only a qualifying exam where your purpose is not clear the exam to appear for Main exam. You will have to clear 2 written tests to clear this entrance exam. If you want to become an IPS Officer, then degree doesn`t mean a lot because even if you have a Master`s degree in any discipline you cannot become an IPS Officer. The Main thing through which you can become an IPS Officer is the Civil Services Exam. If you crack the Civil Services Exam only then you can become an IPS Officer. The Civil Services Exam is conducted every year by the Union Public Services Commission. Through this examination, candidates can join the following services : * Indian Administrative Services * Indian Police Services * Indian Revenue Services * Indian Foreign Services The Basic eligibility Criteria Required for Civil Services Exam are : 1) The minimum educational qualification required is Graduation in any stream from any recognized college/university. 2) Candidates pursuing graduation in final year can also apply. 3) The candidate must be a citizen of India or A Subject of Nepal or a Subject of Bhutan. 4) The Candidate`s age must lie in between 21-30 years if you belong to Open Category. 5) The age limit for OBC Candidates is 21-33 years whereas for SC/ST Candidates it is 21-35 years. 6) Number Of Attempts Allowed : - For General Candidates : 4 - For OBC Candidates : 7 - For SC/ST Candidates : No limit So , Graduation in any stream from any recognized college/university is the minimum education qualification or better say degree that you must have to take on the Civil Services Exam. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Educational Qualifications for IPS : Bachelor’s degree of a recognized university with at least one of the subjects namely Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology or a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Forestry or in Engineering or an equivalent qualification. Age limit: 21 years must be completed on 1st August of the year, which a candidate is appearing. Maximum 30 for general category, 33 for OBCs and 35 for SCs/STs. Number of Attempts: Four attempts for open, seven for OBCs and no limit for SCs/STs. If a person appears in the Preliminary Examination or even one paper is counted as an attempt.
