IAS Mains Papers
For the civil services the Union Public Service Commission conducts the All India Combined Competitive Examination every year. This exam is considered to be the one of the most prestigious exams in the country. The exam is held in two stages- the preliminary exam which is objective type and the main exam which is subjective and is followed by an interview.
Main Examination:
Following papers are included in the main examination:
1. Paper I- It is on one Indian language which is to be selected by the candidate and is of 300 marks.
2. Paper II- the second paper is of English and carries 30 marks.
3. Paper III- paper three is of the essay section and carries 200 marks.
4. Paper IV and V- both the papers are of 300 marks and on general studies.
5. Paper VI to IX- these are optional papers selected by the candidate. Two papers are to be selected with each carrying 300 marks.
The duration of each paper is 3 hours.
The optional papers are : Agriculture, Botany, Chemistry, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Civil Engineering, Geography, Geology, Electrical Engineering, Commerce, Economics, Indian History, Law, Medical Science, Philosophy, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Political Science, Sociology, Statistics, Psychology, Public Administration, Zoology.
The following combinations of papers are not allowed:
• Commerce and Management
• Anthropology and Sociology
• Public Administration and Political Science & International Relations
• Maths and Statistics
• Veterinary Science and Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
• Management and Public Administration
• Any two branches of engineering.
• Medical Science and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science.
The main exam is followed by an interview, a medical test and the probationary officers have to undergo a training.

I would like to ask that as it given that the paper on English will be for 300 marks,but going through the syllabus I find that the paper is divided into two(2) parts.So, I am not able to figure out as to how this paper is going to be held.Also,Sir/Madam as I belong to Shillong(Meghalaya), I believe the paper on Indian Languages is not compulsory for me.
